Dance of Awareness™ is an ecstatic dance and embodiment practice… a process for healing, self-expression & creativity in a safe space.
Dance of Awareness™ is a new approach to working with movement, dance, and awareness. It is a dance and movement practice that aims to increase self-awareness and self-acceptance. And when practiced regularly, can be a very powerful resource for our well-being – body, heart, and soul. Dance of Awareness™ is a joyful exploration of what it is to be in a body, moving in response to inner awareness and outer connectedness.
“This is a dance process for self-expression and personal discovery in a safely held space.”
Dance of Awareness™ has five main streams of influence: Neo-Reichian body-centred psychotherapy; Five Rhythms dance; Authentic Movement; Dance Movement Psychotherapy; and the experiential exploration of Awareness itself.
“How did you, become you?”
The Dance of Awareness™ is similar in structure to the Five Rhythms wave developed by Roth (1999), but has been adapted to take account of psychodynamic theory and developmental psychology. The phases of the cycle follow themes of human development from pre-birth through to around five years. This is the time period associated with the growing sense of self which becomes embodied through early experience, and which sets the patterns for adulthood. This gives the mover the opportunity to re-experience the formative years of early development, explore old imprints, and discover new patterns of moving and relating.
The Dance of Awareness™ works with 6 cycles:
Sensing, Grounding, Expressing, Releasing, Connecting and Completing following an energetic wave of charging and discharging over the course of a session.
Dance of Awareness™ is an open and allowing space where the dancer-mover can express and explore both 1) old adapted ways of moving and being and 2) new possibilities in moving, being, and relating.
As you journey through the cycles, and with some direction from the facilitator, explore the creative movement impulses which are ready to emerge.
Dance of Awareness will help you to explore both, dancing out all that is ready to be released, and dancing in more of your life-giving, life-affirming creative potential!
Through the 6 phases of the Dance of Awareness process, you will be invited to move through the themes of human development from pre-birth up to around five years old. Because the phases of the cycle follow the themes of human development, you are given the opportunity to re-experience your formative years of early development, explore old imprints, and discover new patterns of moving and relating by allowing the dance to emerge naturally.
Dance of Awareness also gives us the opportunity to be aware of the wonders of our own body, our sacred home, living it with kind-heartedness, self-care and compassion.
The Dance of Awareness process is underpinned by an emphasis on awareness as the ground to our experience in the world.
As we move through the cycle, from time to time, I will invite you to ‘come back to awareness’, this means experiencing whatever is emerging here and now, and putting to one side beliefs, thoughts and assumptions, in the interests of giving ourselves permission to allow whatever is ready to come into awareness. What presents itself may be a breath pattern, an image, an emotion, or a bodily sensation. The aim is simply to be present with whatever is happening and to fully experience what arises, with an empathic witnessing.
